SURGERY
Shadow Lake Animal Hospital offers a full range of routine and surgical services for the care of your canine and feline family members. Significant savings for puppy and kitten spays and neuters can be realized for those clients taking advantage of the Value Packages (or Insurance) we offer that include special rates for these procedures.

The surgical suite is fully equipped with the latest in treatment technology to provide the utmost safety and care of your pet during their procedure. State of the art electronic heart , respiratory, blood oxygen content, body temperature and blood pressure monitoring will be done during general anesthesia and surgery. This monitoring helps us to be constantly aware of your pets vital signs during each surgical procedure. For most procedures a IV catheter will be placed to administer fluid therapy during anesthesia to help maintain Blood Pressure and to replace lost fluids due to fasting.

General anesthesia for pets has become safer in the last few years due to the onset of new drugs and better patient monitoring. However, some conditions that may influence the effect of anesthesia on your pet, may not be evident in a physical exam. To better insure your pet's safety under general anesthesia, a blood profile is preformed. This is a profile that measures Kidney & Liver function, tests for Diabetes and other problems. It also includes a (CBC)Complete Blood Count which checks for any underlying infection or anemia that the physical exam would not show. Technical staff provide constant monitoring of your pet before, during, and after surgery until they are fully awake from the anesthesia and stabilized.

Depending on the procedure Pre and Post Surgical Pain Medication is given. Pain is more than an unpleasant sensation or emotion and unrelieved pain can lead to harmful physical effects and may delay healing. Our policy is to control the pain of the pets in our care. We feel that no pet should suffer from unnecessary pain. Post Surgical Pain Medication will be given by injection immediately following surgery and dispensed in the form of oral take home medication if indicated.

Although it can be done while your pet is awake, while your pet is asleep it is a good time to Microchip them. This is a permanent form of identification that is injected underneath the skin to enable lost pets to be recovered quickly, and is not an expensive procedure. Over 7,000 pets are recovered each month and reunited with their owners. Check out their web-site at www.HomeAgainId.com. Also, while your pet is asleep this is a good time for a nail trim. While your pet is sleeping we are able to cut their nails more closely without discomfort to them.

It is the policy of Shadow Lake Animal Hospital to provide continuing education for all professional staff so that as new treatments and therapies become available, we can incorporate them into the practice whenever appropriate.

CHECK-UP
Dr. Cooper and the staff at Shadow Lake Animal Hospital cannot stress enough the importance of annual physicals, which may include blood testing, blood pressure monitoring, laboratory tests and preventive treatments to better ensure your pet's well being. Some pets with chronic diseases or conditions or who are on certain medications require more frequent checkups. For senior pets, those cats and dogs age seven and older, health check-ups twice a year are strongly recommended. As our pets age the likelihood of acquiring or developing a condition or disease increases greatly.

It is even more important to keep close tabs on how the organ systems are functioning since physical symptoms of a disease or condition can sometimes be very subtle. Pets can support life with as little as 20% of their kidneys functioning. When they reach that point there is little that can be done to stop or reverse the problem. Blood testing to evaluate the performance of the heart, thyroid function, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, hematologic and immune systems can be done to pick up problems before they reach the critical level so that preventative measures can be taken. Sometimes a simple thing such as a diet change can make a big difference in developing problems.

Dr. Cooper performs a complete head to tail physical and in addition, Dr. Cooper checks for discomfort associated with the joints which can adversely affect a pet's quality of life as they age. Modern medicine has provided us with a number of medications that relieve the painful symptoms of some of these problems.

As an AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) member, we must meet a high standard of veterinary care. Shadow Lake Animal Hospital is equipped with state of the art technology to perform laboratory tests, radiologic evaluations, electrocardiograms and blood pressure monitoring. AAHA requires member hospitals to meet and maintain more than 900 standards of care in all aspects of the veterinary practice in order to maintain their accreditation with them. Ask us about our AAHA accreditation and how it affects your pet.

We also offer several types of Value Packages that are for puppies, kittens, annual visits for pets 1 year and older, and pets with certain problems, aimed to target both routine visits and specific health care needs at significant savings.

PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
Preventive care for our pets is simply that.....prevent problems before they develop with preventative health care. If vaccinations and treatments are given as indicated to ward off those diseases and conditions we know about, trips to the veterinary hospital will most likely be kept to a minimum. From the time the puppy or kitten enters our home, the need to get those check-ups and schedule those vaccinations, fecal tests, heartworm tests and treatments, begins.

Shadow Lake Animal Hospital offers Value Packages for puppies, kittens, adults, senior pets and pets with special needs, that depending on the package, provide substantial savings on vaccinations, laboratory and diagnostic tests, spaying and neutering, and internal and external parasite prevention.

LABORATORY
Shadow Lake Animal Hospital is fully equipped to provide routine, same day laboratory analysis of blood, urine, skin, and stool samples. Specialized testing is sent out to the clinical laboratory with results usually within 24 to 48 hours. Pets needing laboratory workups need not spend the day at the hospital, simply schedule a time to stop by and have samples taken or, where appropriate, drop off the sample during regular office hours. We'll telephone the results as soon as we have them.

PHARMACY
Shadow Lake Animal Hospital has a full line of most commonly prescribed medications and preventive therapies for our canine and feline friends. Prescriptions are filled as indicated during your health care visits with Dr. Cooper, or as needed for preventive and continuing care. Clients are welcome to call the office to request refills on prescriptions, send us an e-mail, or visit our website to submit refill requests. We will gladly call in prescriptions to local pharmacies for those medications we don't routinely carry.

Always striving to keep costs down, Shadow Lake Animal Hospital analyzes and selects quality prescription medicines that realize the best savings for our clients and meets the needs of pet family members.

DENTISTRY
FEBRAUARY IS OUR DENTAL DISCOUNT MONTH, RECEIVE 10% OFF OF YOUR PET'S DENTAL. CALL AND SET UP AN APPOINTMENT TODAY.

There's nothing like a great smile and sweet smelling breath so don't forget your pet's smile! Healthy gums help ensure healthy teeth and good physical health as well. Certain diseases of the heart, kidney, and liver have been associated with gingivitis that can easily be treated and prevented with dental check-ups and cleanings as needed. Depending on certain conditions such as breed and age, cleanings may be needed on an annual basis. During the procedure, your pet is under a general inhalation anesthetic and the teeth are evaluated for cracks, cavities, infections and alignment. Infected and cracked teeth are generally pulled and a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums is also performed.

Dr. Cooper has also removed retained baby teeth in puppies and adult dogs and cats to prevent over-crowding and misalignment of permanent teeth. Also available are various dental pastes, and "dental diets" so that tooth brushing and feedings can be introduced to your pet and become part of the home dental care program.

February, August, and September are our annual Dental Health Care Months and the staff at Shadow Lake Animal Hospital will be emphasizing the importance of dental care in overall pet health care. Depending on your pet's age, Value Packages providing significant savings specifically for dental services for your pet family members are also available.

TRAINING/OBEDIENCE
A recent article from the New York Times News Service discussed the latest news surrounding behavior problems in pets. It was encouraging to note that veterinary specialists are seeing an increased amount of awareness and involvement on the part of owners in addressing the undesired behavior, working on a solution, and avoiding getting rid of the pet.

As a full service veterinary hospital, Shadow Lake Animal Hospital offers assistance with training and behavior modification. Our goal is to help our clients establish and maintain a satisfying and healthy relationship with their pet family members.

We are fortunate to be able to recommend and enlist the help of Edd Gordon, a behaviorist and licensed dog trainer in Florida since 1972. Edd has done many types of training such as working extensively with the American Kennel Club and competing in the show ring, both for show and obedience. However, Edd now dedicates his time to helping pet owners prevent potential behavior problems and cure those that may exist. He is available for private and group training sessions.

Chiropractic Adjustments
CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS FOR YOUR PET NOW OFFERED

We are pleased to announce the association with Dr. Lorra Nuzum DC to bring chiropractic services for your pet. Dr. Nuzum will be using the VOM technique which was developed by a veterinarian orthopedist over 20 years ago to gently realign the spine and extremities of the animal. It has been used on thousands of pets with great success to reduce their pain levels and disabilities. The subluxations are easily found and corrected by using a adjusting instrument with little or no discomfort to the pet. The beauty of this technique and instrument is that it can not harm your pet, as there is no twisting involved. Examples of conditions that could benefit from an adjustment are: lameness, joint pain, back and neck pain, digestive disorders, performance and behavioral problems plus many more.

After the pet is adjusted you may see an immediate response or it may take several weeks depending on the severity of the case. A series of adjustments is usually needed to reach a point where the subluxation pattern is corrected. Maintenance checks may be recommended every 4 to 6 months to watch for reoccurrence. Cats being very flexible animals usually respond faster than dogs do.

Please talk to us for more information or visit the web-site WellAdjustedAnimals.com We will be happy to set up an appointment for your pet.

HomeAgain Microchipping
Did you know that 10 million pets get lost every year and without ID 90% don’t return home. Unfortunately, collars and tags can be lost. With HomeAgain microchip over 7,000 pets are recovered each month and reunited with their owners. HomeAgain has recovered over 500,000 lost dogs and cats. Microchipping can be done at any age, any time and we highly recommend it for both dogs and cats. This is a permanent form of identification that is injected underneath the skin to enable lost pets to be recovered quickly, and is not an expensive procedure.

We can microchip your pet with a 10 minute office visit. We shave a small area in between the shoulder blades and inject a local anaesthetic to numb the area. The microchip is then injected under the skin where it will stay. You will fill out a short registration form and return it to the receptionist who will handle the registration for you.

When you report your pet missing Homeagain notifies their network of rescuers with a “Lost Pet Alert”. They send out e-mail alerts which include a flyer with your and your pet’s information complete with your pet’s picture, if available. If your pet gets lost and is found either a humane society or a veterinarian can scan your pet. The information they get when they scan the pet tells them what type of chip and the number on the chip. They call the correct chip company who in turn contacts the owner. With HomeAgain you also have a lost pet medical insurance available at no cost, but you have to call and activate it initially and with each renewal. If your pet is injured while lost, the insurance covers up to $3,000 with a $50.00 deductible. Several of us at Shadow Lake Animal Hospital have had a pet recovered because of the microchip. Check out their web-site at www.HomeAgainId.com.
